in the bag

BOOKS - MUSIC - PODCASTS, LIFESTYLE

in_the_bagHave you read The Goldfinch yet? When Bri from Mamages asked me to share what I’ve been carrying around in my bag recently, I had to include this read. I’ve literally toted it with me everywhere the last month, finding random 15 minute intervals to resume. Although the plot moves quickly and with increasing intensity, Tartt managed to endear me to her characters, sprinkling poetic glimmers throughout an otherwise dark exploration of humanity, beauty, and worth. If you’re looking for a read this summer, I highly recommend this Pulitzer Prize winner. If you’re curious about what else I’m carrying around you can find it over here.

  1. I read it several months ago and almost gave up (around page 436 or so) when I had to turn it back in to the library. Also, the Las Vegas section made me want to abandon hope. Then, I went to my parents’ house and my mom had bought a copy because Donna Tartt is from the same town in Mississippi where she grew up. So, I finished it after all. And I was mostly glad. I think I still prefer The Secret History, though I read it many years ago when it was first published, and I don’t exactly remember why I liked it.

One of the biggest perks of working for the college is no late fees on rentals–because this was the only I was able to finish the book. I assured Mark he should NOT read it right now because of the bleak trudging through this character’s nihilistic life (not great meditations for how life has dealt with us lately). As a believer, this story reminded me–sometimes in ways I didn’t want to see or read–this is all of our plight apart from Jesus. The desperation, the darkness, the orphan scraping his meager existence. It’s all of our story in some regard. Or at least part of it. I suppose I’m always a bit in awe of works of this caliber. ;)

Haha! So do I! I love its size. Easy enough to keep organized and big enough to throw extra things in when I’m headed somewhere. x

      1. Where is your bag from? I love it! I’m looking for a great leather bag as a new wardrobe staple. Any suggestions?

  2. That’s the second time someone has written a blog post about that book this week. Perhaps I should give it a go!

You certainly should. Just know you may find yourself staying up too late at night reading it. ;)
